“Theater gives you the opportunity to interact with what you are seeing and what is happening in real time,” Sonia McNelis said. “And micro theater is so close, placing you, the audience, in an intimate space. The actors bring you into the play with their words and eye contact. It is truly a special experience.”
McNelis, originally from Colombia, moved to Tallahassee 22 years ago and has made it her home while helping to uplift Hispanic culture in the community.
McNelis has been instrumental in advancing the mission of the Tallahassee Hispanic Theater, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. In August, it will host its 9th Annual Micro Theater Festival at Goodwood Museum & Gardens.
At this year’s festival, McNelis will be directing the monologue “From Mary to Mary,” written by Spanish playwright Paloma Pedrero.
The shows being presented during the festival, including “From Mary to Mary,” are thought-provoking, timely, educational, and inspiring, showcasing local talent while connecting diverse audiences. McNelis said, “It’s a unique opportunity to experience theatre in a small setting. You are right there. No separation. Audience members will walk away with a greater appreciation and understanding of different cultures and the commonalities among us.”
