Curtains up! This spring, Tallahassee Ballet will perform “Coppélia,” an iconic ballet with a mischievous twist. COCA sits down with lead dancer Sophia Lutinski to discuss the joy and responsibility of performance. The ballet takes the stage at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall for three shows, May 9-10.
Sophia Lutinski knew who she was from a very young age. Specifically, the age of 7, when she told her mother she would grow up to be a professional ballerina.
That wasn’t unusual to hear in this creative family. Lutinski had been dancing since she was 4, alongside her two sisters. Lutinski also played the viola. Both her parents worked in the public sector in Virginia but took time to follow their artistic passions on the side.
So, Lutinski wasn’t kidding. She went on to train at many ballet companies in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In 2020, she graduated from high school, and then in 2021, she joined the Tallahassee Ballet. Just two years later, after dancing a variety of company roles, she was promoted to a soloist.
